Books on Tibetan History & Politics

Writing on Tibet's history has always been contested ground. Accounts by early European travellers, Tibetan exiles and Chinese state publishers can describe the same events in irreconcilable terms, so serious readers tend to pair a scholarly narrative with first-hand accounts from more than one side.

The core reading falls into three periods: the old Tibetan state under the Dalai Lamas and its relations with the Qing court; the twentieth-century contest between Britain, China and Russia that brought explorers and armies to Lhasa; and the events of 1950-1959 and the exile that followed. Memoirs, photographs and anthropological studies of Tibetan society before 1950 are irreplaceable sources for all three.

Where to start

  1. A History of Modern Tibet, 1913-1951: The Demise of the Lamaist State — Melvyn C. Goldstein, 1989. The detailed, archive-based political history of Tibet before 1951.
  2. The Dragon in the Land of Snows — Tsering Shakya, 1999. The standard history of Tibet since 1947, by a Tibetan historian.
  3. Tibetan Civilization — R. A. Stein, 1972. A classic survey of Tibetan society, religion and culture across its whole history.
  4. Trespassers on the Roof of the World (in stock) — Peter Hopkirk, 1982. The race of explorers, spies and soldiers to reach Lhasa.
  5. Seven Years in Tibet — Heinrich Harrer, 1952. The best-known first-hand account of Lhasa in the 1940s.
  6. Freedom in Exile — the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, 1990. The Dalai Lama's autobiography.
