Books on Tibetan Buddhism

Tibetan Buddhism reached the English-speaking world in two waves: scholarly translation from the late nineteenth century, then a flood of teaching books after 1959, when lamas in exile began publishing for Western students. The result is a literature that runs from strict philological translations of Indian and Tibetan treatises to transcribed weekend talks, and it pays to know which kind you are holding.

The backbone of most traditions is the lamrim, the graded path to enlightenment, so a classic lamrim text and a good modern introduction make the best starting pair. From there readers usually branch into a single lineage — Gelug, Kagyu, Nyingma or Sakya — or into specific practices such as mind training (lojong), Mahamudra, Dzogchen or the Kalachakra tantra. Many of the small-press editions of the 1970s to 1990s (Snow Lion, Wisdom, Tharpa, Dharma Publishing, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives) are long out of print and now circulate mainly second-hand.

Where to start

  1. The Words of My Perfect Teacher (in stock) — Patrul Rinpoche, 1994. The nineteenth-century Nyingma guide to the preliminary practices, still the standard first book in many Tibetan centres (English translation by the Padmakara Translation Group).
  2. The Jewel Ornament of Liberation — Gampopa, 1959. The twelfth-century Kagyu stages-of-the-path text; Herbert Guenther's translation first appeared in 1959.
  3. The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment — Tsongkhapa, 2000. The Lamrim Chenmo, foundation text of the Gelug school, in the three-volume Snow Lion translation (2000-2004).
  4. Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism — John Powers, 1995. The most widely used university introduction: history, doctrine, practice and the four schools in one volume.
  5. The Tibetan Book of the Dead — Padmasambhava (attrib.), trans. Gyurme Dorje, 2005. The first complete English translation of the Bardo Thodol cycle, edited by Graham Coleman and Thupten Jinpa.
  6. Kindness, Clarity, and Insight — the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, 1984. Lectures translated and edited by Jeffrey Hopkins; a clear way into the Dalai Lama's own teaching voice.
  7. Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism — Chögyam Trungpa, 1973. Talks that shaped how a generation of Western students approached Tibetan practice.
