The Himalaya produced two great bodies of writing in the twentieth century: the mountaineering literature that followed the first ascents of the 1950s, and the travel and ethnographic writing that followed Nepal's opening to foreigners in the same decade. Bhutan, closed far longer, has a smaller and more recent shelf.
Alongside the famous expedition books, look for the large-format photographic surveys of the 1970s to 1990s, the regional studies of Nepalese society and development published in Kathmandu and Delhi, and the guidebooks and phrasebooks that serious trekkers kept long after their trip.
