Books on Medieval German Literature

The study of Middle High German literature is built on a small number of standard editions — Karl Bartsch's and the Altdeutsche Textbibliothek series among them — revised again and again by later editors, so the edition and reviser matter as much as the text.

Older German monographs and series volumes from university presses are the core of any working library, and many are available only second-hand.

Where to start

  1. Das Nibelungenlied — ed. Karl Bartsch, rev. Helmut de Boor. The standard student edition of the epic, in continuous revision.
  2. Kudrun (in stock) — ed. Karl Bartsch, rev. Karl Stackmann, 1865. The other great heroic epic, in Bartsch's edition.
  3. Parzival — Wolfram von Eschenbach, c. 1210. The grail romance, essential in any edition.
  4. Mittelhochdeutsche Grammatik — Hermann Paul, 1881. The grammar every student of the language uses.
