Books on Modern & European Art

Modern art has the richest catalogue literature of any field: every important gallery and museum exhibition since the early twentieth century produced a book, and many small dealer catalogues — Marlborough, Galerie Maeght, Knoedler, Sidney Janis — are now scarce documents of what was shown and sold.

A good general history gives the map; the monographs and catalogues fill it in. European-language editions are often fuller and cheaper than their English counterparts.

Where to start

  1. The Story of Art — E. H. Gombrich, 1950. The most-read art history ever written.
  2. History of Modern Art — H. H. Arnason, 1968. The long-running textbook survey of modern art.
  3. The Shock of the New — Robert Hughes, 1980. A vivid, opinionated history of modernism.
  4. Concerning the Spiritual in Art — Wassily Kandinsky, 1911. A founding text of abstraction.
  5. Art Since 1900 — Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Alain Bois and Benjamin Buchloh, 2004. The scholarly survey of twentieth-century art.
