Antique Toy & Collectibles Auction Catalogues

Specialist toy and Americana auctions publish catalogues that double as reference books: every lot photographed, described and graded, often from a single famous collection. For identifying a bank, a windup or a character item — and for seeing what comparable pieces have been offered — collectors keep runs of them on the shelf, alongside the standard handbooks.

A catalogue is most useful with its prices-realized list, which some houses printed separately; collection sales (named for the collector) are the ones most often cited.

Where to start

  1. Toys in America — Inez and Marshall McClintock, 1961. The pioneering history of American toy making.
  2. The Bank Book: The Encyclopedia of Mechanical Bank Collecting — Bill Norman, 1984. The standard illustrated reference on mechanical banks.
  3. Antique Toys and Their Background — Gwen White, 1971. A broad history of toys across Europe and America.
